Emmys Edwardian Cycling Sweater started its journey with an email from Lauren, founder of the historical shoe brand American Duchess, writing: “I have a proposal for you. What do you think about a cross-brand product collaboration? There is a particular 1890s sweater that everyone in the vintage and historical dress community seems to have been lusting after for years - you know this one!...”. Emmy didn’t even have to click the link to know which sweater it was. The rest is, as they say, history.
In its day, this type of garment was classified as sportswear or casual wear and as they were used to bits there are very few of them left today. The Edwardian Cycling Sweater sets the tone for the rest of our collection and marks the start of our dig further back in history. We hope you want to come along on the ride! We’ve worked hard to get our Edwardian Cycling Sweater as true to the museum piece from the 1890s as possible without compromising on the voluminous leg-of-mutton sleeves. Despite the very historically correct look, the sweater looks just as awesome with a pair of skinny jeans for a contemporary look, or with a 1930s-40s inspired outfit as the Edwardian silhouette was back in fashion in that era too. The overall rib knit gives this sweater its flattering hourglass shaped silhouette, and also makes it so warm and dense it could easily be worn as outerwear in climates milder than our Scandinavian. In addition to the very voluminous leg-of-mutton sleeves with cuffed hems, the sweater also sports a turtle neck collar with buttoning in both sides continuing along the shoulders. You only really need to open one side to get into the sweater though. The material used for this garment is used for most our knits, both in Winter and Summertime. The yarn is in 100 % merino wool in the highest possible quality. Wool's inherent breathability and moisture-wicking properties help regulate body temperature, keeping you cool in the Summer and warm in the Winter. The breathability of wool doesn’t feel clammy when you sweat and prevents you from overheating. Wool also stays fresh long, cutting down on washes. Let it air out between wears and when it eventually needs washing just follow the advice on the care label to use mild wool detergent and machine wash it at wool settings or by hand. Wool is infamously itchy, but we use only the softest fibers and the softness is even further enhanced by a softening treatment. As a new customer, you will get pleasantly surprised by the extreme softness of our knitwear. Furthermore, wool is very durable and will last a lifetime if cared for properly. In other words, investing in an emmy garment in pure wool is money well spent!
